Myopia in children – prevention and treatment

People with myopia can see clearly only the objects that are close to them, at a distance they see only blurry silhouettes.

One of the risk groups of developing myopia are students of the elementary school as the lifestyle of a modern child is changing rapidly and radically.

Causes of illness:

1. Impossible to influence:

  • heredety;

2. Possible to influence:

  • significant visual load;
  • lack of physical activity and outdoor recreation;
  • vitamins and trace elements deficiency.

How to tell if a child has visual disorders?

Before going to the first grade it is imperative for your child to visit an ophthalmologist, even in the absence of any complaints, as parents do not always notice a deviation in the child's vision.

How can I tell if my child's vision is getting worse?

You should consult the doctor if the child:

  • holds objects at a less than 40 cm distance from the eyes;
  • watches TV very closely;
  • keeps his/her head low above the notebook when writing or drawing;
  • squints one or both eyes;
  • tilts his/her head sideways when writing;
  • complains of eye fatigue and/or eye redness;
  • can't see objects or inscriptions from afar (if myopia is not present, the child can see wrighting on the board from the last desk in the classroom; on the street she/he can see the car number from a 40 meter distance);
  • often complains of a headache.

Your child was diagnosed with myopia – what to do?

  1. Accept this fact, control the process. Do not ignore the vision impairment. Diseases of the eyes do not pass by themselves, they cannot be "outgrown". First of all, keep in mind that the treatment must be continuous and long-lasting.
  2. The first method of correction is to prescribe glasses. The use of contact lenses is also recommended. Preschool children are rarely prescribed them because it is difficult for the child to use the lenses independently.
  3. The key to successful treatment are regular visits to the ophthalmologist. A child with myopia should be consulted on an individual plan. The number and frequency of the visits depends on the degree of visual impairment and the method of correction. The modern approach to controlling myopia is to provide the highest possible central vision. This is achieved by the appointment of the eyeglasses or contact lenses of appropriate strength.

Should I notify the school teacher of my child's vision problems?

  • Tell the teacher what kind of disorder the child has (myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism, strabismus etc.);
  • If the child has a problem but hasn't been prescribed glasses yet, it is best for him/her to sit at the first or second desk. If a child uses glasses he or she can sit at any desk.
  • From time to time ask your child if everything is clearly visible to him/her in the classroom and, if the child has complaints, discuss with the teacher what desk he or she can sit at to see everything well.

How to convince your child that glasses should be worn?

  1. Explain to the child that the glasses are a method of treatment, an opportunity to see well.
  2. Give the examples of well-known personalities that are authoritative for your child who wear glasses – actors, musicians, athletes. This can help.
  3. Allow your child to choose the eyeglass frame for his/her taste.

What should I do to minimize myopia progression?

  • Normalize your child's regime of day and leisure time;
  • Restrict the use of gadgets;
  • Make sure your child spends at least 2 hours a day outdoors;
  • Encourage him/her to play sports – swimming and sports related to moving objects (ball, shuttlecock). The eye follows the object and thus the vision trains involuntarily;
  • Enrich the child's diet with foods that help with the normal functioning of the visual
